About Gotham Gazette
From Councilpedia
For more than a decade, Gotham Gazette has provided independent coverage of the politics and policy that shape life for New York City's more than 8 million residents. Through original reporting, analysis and commentary, we aim to enrich and enliven the debate over the decisions that affect everyone who lives or works here -- or simply cares about America's largest city. Since it launched in 1999, Gotham Gazette has been a pioneer in the emerging world of online local journalism.
Award-winning reporting by our staff and freelance journalists, along with analysis and commentary by policy makers, advocates, officials and experts provide an incisive look at the key issues facing our constantly changing city. The "Eye Opener," our daily news digest, gathers the most relevant New York City news stories from sources across the city to present a comprehensive view of what's happening in city issues and politics. Gotham Gazette also provides links to important articles and reports about New York City, as well as blogs, ethnic media, government agencies, advocacy groups and think tanks. Our blog "The Wonkster" provides breaking news throughout the day as well as sometimes irreverent takes on goings on in our city and state.
Gotham Gazette's "Searchlight on City Hall" and "Eye on Albany" sections offer in-depth information on what is going on in city and state government. Along with original reporting, our City Hall coverage includes a database of city laws, individual pages about every City Council district, and a selection of links to newsworthy stories from other sources. "Eye on Albany" offers a similar perspective on state government, with an emphasis on how its actions affect New York City. Our Albany coverage includes articles on key issues, a page about every State Senate and State Assembly district in the city and a comprehensive roundup of links to substantive coverage in other media.
Gotham Gazette has won many awards and much praise, including the the 2009 and 2003 Online Journalism Awards for General Excellence, given by the Online News Association, and the 2002 award for service journalism; the 2010 award for best web-exclusive content from the New York Press Club and the Innovator Award from the Pew Center for Civic Journalism. We are the only publication to have won two Knight news challenge grants -- in 2007 and 2009.
Gotham Gazette has pioneered the use of the web in providing focused, timely coverage of local elections. Since 2001, we have offered comprehensive coverage of New York City primary and general elections, focusing on the issues in communities across the city as well as the candidates. "Who's Running for What" constantly updates this information for city and state races, offering up-to-date material on all the candidates.
